ACanstruction of the Southern Tier -Food Bank’s 1st Annual Design/Build Competition

Elmira, NY – The Food Bank of the Southern Tier announces their 1st annual Canstruction of the Southern Tier will take place at the Arnot Mall from April 16—April 22, 2009. On Friday, April 17th, each structure will be judged and at 5:30 awards will be presented. The community is invited to celebrate and view the structures throughout the Arnot Mall.

The seven teams participating in the 2009 Canstruction of the Southern Tier Event include Corning Incorporated Ethnic Diversity Group of Employees, Corning Incorporated Professional Network, Foor & Associates Architects together with Welliver McGuire Inc., Holiday Inn Riverview together with Holiday Inn Express, Hunt Engineers, Islamic Association of the Finger Lakes and Wegmans. Participating teams will compete to build unique structures made entirely of canned foods that will be donated to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

Canstruction is a global, not-for-profit anti-hunger project founded by the Society for Design Administrations, an affiliate of the American Institute of Architects committed to “Canstructing” a world without hunger. The Southern Tier is joining more than 100 other cities across the United States and Canada in fighting hunger by competing in this unique and effective design, build and exhibit event. The Southern Tier event will be one of only three locations in New York State to host a Canstruction. About the Food Bank
In operation since 1981, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier distributes food and food-related products to people in need through a network of more than 180 hunger-relief agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other non-profit organizations. The Food Bank also has a number of programs that fight hunger including the BackPack Program™ and Mobile Food Pantry. Located in Elmira, NY it is a regional agency of Catholic Charities and one of eight Feeding America affiliate Food Banks in New York State serving the six counties of Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Tompkins, Tioga and Steuben.
